Reward in International NGO Survey (RINGO)
ORC’s Reward in International NGO Survey examines salary and benefits for more than 50 key international and headquarters posts relating to international programming, as well as international reward policies and practices.
In an ever-changing global environment and rapidly shifting world economy, it’s even more important than ever to know your market, to ensure your organization is not overpaying while still remaining competitive and retaining key talent.
- Compare jobs, salaries, and structure to international staffing in the sector
- Benefit from up-to-date information on housing and cost-of-living trends
- Access one comprehensive survey that covers multiple job roles
- Network with global peers with the same challenges
In just four short years, the RINGO survey has evolved in concert with world events into a global offering. And, as the survey has grown, so has the ability of participants to network with global peers facing similar challenges in the sector.
RINGO survey participants hail from more than 50 international NGOs employing over 150,000 people in more than 120 countries, with a total annual budget in excess of 1.5 billion. As such, the survey provides, in one place, more robust NGO role-specific data than can be acquired from multiple, individual surveys, making it more cost-effective and easier to contrast and compare positions, secure in the knowledge that the data is accurate and up-to-date. Participation in RINGO provides you with the ability to:
- Understand trends. The survey tracks recent trends on housing, support for dependents, cost of living or allowances, leave, relocation and more, allowing you to make good decisions for your employees.
- Access expert advice and analysis. RINGO participants have access to more than data: you’ll receive analysis of the trends and obtain ad hoc support in interpreting and using the data. In addition, you’re eligible to join ORC and People in Aid meetings and webinars to discuss recent outcomes.
- Network with like-minded peers. As a RINGO participant, you have the opportunity to become part of an international community that tackles the big issues in rewards and human resources for international staffing, as they happen, by participating in flash surveys, webinars, meetings, and online discussion.
- Help shape the survey for the future. When you take part in the RINGO survey, you have the ability to influence future iterations, ensuring that it continues to provide the information that will be most helpful to your organization going forward.
RINGO’s History and Partners
In 2005, ORC Worldwide and a number of INGOs joined together to establish a survey for US based international NGOs. The following year, working with People in Aid, European organizations with similar needs began integrating into what is now a global offering. The survey is guided by steering members, which have included Oxfam GB, IRC, Save UK and US, The Leprosy Mission, Merlin, World Vision, CARE, Plan International, and IUCN.

Taxes
The majority of organisations do contribute to taxes for expatriates, with nearly 50% providing tax advise. 57.1% of organisations pay the local taxes for their assignee, and a further 14.3% make a contribution to home or host taxes while on assignment. Interestingly though the sector is not levying hypothetical home taxes to assist with the contributions they are making to assignee taxes as much as the private sector. Only about 19% of the organisations that responded indicated they were providing tax equalisation; where the assignee pays the equivalent of their home country taxes when the organisation is paying their host taxes. However in the private sector we see as many as 81% of organisations implementing tax equalisation policies.
